Fibrocystic breast disease

    Fibrocystic breast disease is a common condition which causes painful lumpy breasts. Up to 50% of women are told at some time in their lives that they have fibrocystic breast disease. Fibrocystic breast disease most commonly occurs before menopause (change of life) but may also occur after menopause especially in women taking estrogen.

Breast infections and nipple discharge

  • Breast infections are rarely cancers.
  • Inflammatory and ulcerated cancers can be confused with breast infections.
  • Cancer causes only about 15% of clear or bloody nipple discharge. Eighty-five percent of clear or bloody nipple discharge is not caused by cancer.
  • Cancer does not cause brown or green nipple discharge.
  • Increased prolactin (milk releasing hormone) secretion by the brain's pituitary gland causes some milky nipple discharge.
