Understanding Your Risk of Developing Breast Cancer

Inherited Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is common in families, but recognized inherited genetic mutations (changes in our genes) cause only a few breast cancers. BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 gene mutations are common in eastern and central European Jewish women. BRCA-1 mutations cause breast and ovarian cancer. BRCA-2 mutations cause breast cancer, but not ovarian cancer.
